the Fugitive & the Feral
This body of work addresses a fugitive moment—the movement and action of flocks of birds recognized as “murmurations.” Unlike most memories weighted by the accuracy in re-telling, the recounting of this phenomenon is open and left to interpretation, application, and connection. By paring down the migratory event to an action, formal possibilities and material experimentation take on greater significance.

The paintings carry and bury images simultaneously. Layers of transparent nylon canvas obscure or veil the action of glossy washes of transparent oil and varnish. Movements are reduced to bold ribbons cut from past drawings and paintings that feel as temporary and fleeting as the image they hold and suggest.

Feral in nature, smoke is as ephemeral as the image it self, and references itself as it constructs the “fugitive moment.” Within the smoke, the items burned carry additional significance or irreverence. In addition to the usual mixture of cards, photos and slides of my past artwork, new materials were introduced. Acrylic paint, prescription drugs, a roll of film, and a videotape of Harrison Ford’s movie The Fugitive were also burned to produce the smoke used in this work.
